Initial Consultation & Master Plan.

The initial consultation and master plan.

In May 2005 a steering group known as the Nant y Gollen Environmental Project commissioned Community Design Gwent to complete a master plan for the restoration of the American Gardens in partnership with the local community.

At a public meeting held in September 2005 the following vision for the project was accepted:

To secure the long term restoration of the American Gardens in partnership with the local community and landowner to provide a local, regional and potentially national resource of great heritage.

The way forward identified by this study was:

·        The development of a Local Interpretation Plan

This plan was developed in 2007 is available for you to view.

·        A programme of work to secure and improve the site boundaries with particular emphasis on The Woodlands

A partnership continues with Communities First, the Operational Services Team of Torfaen County Borough Council, Bron Afon Housing Association, Pontypool Park Estates and local people to alleviate some of the problems associated with fly tipping and anti social behaviour at the back of the Woodlands (the eastern boundary of the American Gardens.)

On the western boundary a project has begun to restore the dry stone wall through a series of introductory dry stone walling courses for local people. The Public Right of Way that runs along this boundary is now passable and continues to be maintained.

·        The development of an agreed brief for the commissioning of a full feasibility study

The Project worked with various agencies to secure funding and commission various studies such as the ecological survey, rhododendron survey and tree condition survey and inventory of species. All these pieces of work were recommended as a route to the development of a brief for a full feasibility study.

·        The commissioning of the full feasibility study

This has now been completed and is available in full for you to view.
